CHAPTER I Introduction Bandung is the capital of West Java province at once the third largest metropolitan city in Indonesia after Jakarta and Surabaya. Located about 180 kilometers southeast of Jakarta, at an altitude 768 meters (2,520 ft) above sea level and the city lies on a river basin surrounded by volcanic mountains. Bandung has cooler temperatures all year-round than most other Indonesian cities. Bandung city drained the two main rivers, the Cikapundung river and Citarum river and its tributaries which generally flows to the south and meet at the Citarum river. With such conditions, South Bandung is very susceptible to flooding problems, especially during the rainy season. Bandung is the most populous city in West Java, where the population is dominated by ethnic of Sundanese, while Javanese the largest minority population in this city compared to other ethnic groups. The northern part of the city is hillier than the rest; the distinguished truncated flat-peak shape of the Tangkuban Perahu volcano can be seen from the city to the north. Long-term volcanic activity has created fertile andisol soil in the north, suitable for intensive rice, fruit, tea, tobacco and coffee plantations. In the south and east, alluvial soils deposited by the Cikapundung river are mostly found. There are many attractions in Bandung and one of them is Tangkuban Perahu Mountain. CHAPTER II DISCUSSION Tangkuban Parahu or Tangkuban Perahu Mountain is one of the mountains which located in the province of West Java, Indonesia. About 20 km to the north of Bandung, with a lush carpet of pine trees and tea plantations in the surrounding mountains as high as Tangkuban Perahu has 2084 meters altitude. These mountains form is Stratovulcano the center of the eruption that moves from east to west. Rock types are mostly issued by the eruption of lava and sulfur, minerals which released when mountain is active is sulfur brimstone, and when the mountain is not active is sulfur vapor. Tangkuban Perahu Mountain area is managed by the Forestry Housing. The average daily temperature is 17oC during the day and 2oC at night. According to the geological history, Tangkuban Perahu formed from recurring eruption activities of Volcano in prehistoric Sunda. Record of the eruption in last two centuries is in 1829, 1846, 1862, 1887, 1896, 1910, and 1929. Based on the local folk legends, the origins of Mount Tangkuban Perahu associated with the legend of Sangkuriang, narrated in love with his mother, Dayang Sumbi. To thwart the intention of marrying his son, Dayang Sumbi stipulating Sangkuriang to makes the boat overnight. When his efforts failed, Sangkuriang angry and kicked the boat, so it landed in state of upside down. Then the boat formed Mount Tangkuban Perahu. Tangkuban Perahu includes an active volcano whose status is being watched by the Directorate of Volcanology Indonesia. Some of the crater is still showing signs activity of this mountain. Among these signs is the appearance of volcanic gas sulfur and hot springs at the foot of the mountain include in the region Ciater, Subang. The existence of this mountain and the form of the Bandung topography with hills and mountain on each side to strengthen the thory of the existence of a lake (crater) is now a major area of Bandung. Believed by geologist that the highlands Bandung with a height of approximately 709 meters above sea level are the remnants of ancient volcanoes known as Mount Sunda, and Tangkuban Perahu is the remainder of ancient mount Sunda which still active. CHAPTER III CONCLUSION Bandung is the capital of West Java province as well as the largest metropolitan city in West Java. Drained by the two main rivers, Cikapundung and Citarum river, also surrounded by the mountains, one of them is Mount Tangkuban Perahu. Mount of Tangkuban Perahu is one of the mainstay nature attractions tatar Parahyangan located in Bandung regency of West Java. The volcano which still active is situated at an altitude of 2084 meters above sea level. The shape of Mount Tangkuban Perahu quite unique, because its unique shape able to attract many visitors or tourist. Tourist who come are very interested to see the crater up close. More than that tourist will be treated to a panorama of the surrounding valley which is very beautiful.
