Name : Yuli Octavia NPM : 15609745 Class : 3SA02 Angklung, traditional musical instrument of Sundanese CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background Indonesia is a country which consist of many island, each island has a different tribe. Every region in Indonesia, has a culture with each characteristic as well as West Java. West Java is one of the provinces in Indonesia that the capital city is in Bandung. Historical development shows that the province of West Java is the first established in the territory of Indonesia. Besides that West Java is also the province with the largest population in Indonesia. Sundanese tribe is a tribe that contained in West Java province. Sundanese culture is one of the old culture in Indonesia. Sundanese cultute known for its culture that upholds the good manners. Generally, the characters of Sundanese people are warm-hearted, easy smile, and great respect for the elderly. In the Sundanese language taught how to use subtle language to parents. Sundanese culture has certain characteristic that distinguish it from other cultures. In general, the West Javanese or Sundanese known for its religious socities. This tendency appears as the slogan “Silih asih, silih asah, silih asuh” which means to love one another, sharpen each other and protect each other. On Sunda culture, magical balance is maintained by performing traditional ceremonies. While the balance of social, Sundanese societies do mutual aid to defend it. Sundanese culture is also one of culture which is the source of wealth for the nation of Indonesia in its development needs to be preserved. Sundanese culture has a lot of arts, among them are typical Sundanese dance, puppet show, and the typical musical instruments. One of typical Sundanese musical instrument is Angklung. Angklung is a musical instrument multitonal (double pitched) which traditionally grown in the Sundanese-speaking community in West Java. This music instrument made from bamboo, sounded by shaken so it produces a vibrating sound in the arrangement of tones 2, 3, up to 4 tones in every size, whether large and small. The sound is caused by a clash of bamboo pipe body. Angklung is listed as Cultural Heritage Masterpieces of Oral and Non-human material from UNESCO since November 2010. CHAPTER II DISCUSSION II.1 Angklung Angklung is a musical instrument made of bamboo strips. This instrument consists of 2-4 bamboo tubes are assembled into one with rattan rope. Bamboo tubes details carved and cut in such a way by a professional craftsman angklung to produce a specific tone when bamboo frame shaken. Each angklung produce different tones or chords so that some players must cooperate to produce a beautiful melody. This instrument has been known since ancient times in some areas of Indonesia, especially in West Java, Central Java, East Java, and Bali. The word angklung comes from the Sundanese is 'angkleung-angkleungan' the movement of angklung players, as well as of sound 'klung' produced this bamboo instrument. The development of angklung is actually a musical instrument calung, the bamboo tube beaten, while the angklung is a bamboo tube shaken so as to produce only one note for each instrument. In the past traditions of Sunda, angklung instruments have a function in a religious ritual that is to invite Dewi Sri (Goddess of rice a symbol of prosperity) so down to earth and give the fertility of rice plants. Until now still found in some villages that use angklung Buhun ceremony for traditional activities such as: harvest festival, ngaseuk pare, nginebkeun pare, ngampihkeun pare, seren taun, Nadran, helaran, turun bumi, and sedekah bumi. In West Java, angklung has been played since the 7th century. Baduy people, from the village of Kanekes still play traditional angklung called angklung Buhun in some of their traditional ceremonies. Angklung Baduy consists of four rack or parts, namely: king-king, indo, panempas, and gong-gong. On the border of Cirebon and Indramayu, precisely in the Bungko Village, there is another type of angklung named angklung bungko. Angklung Bungko is believed to have been aged 600 years and still preserved and maintained even though no longer used. Angklung bungko created by Sheikh Bentong or Ki Gede Bungko, which is a religious leader who used it as a medium for the spread of Islam. In 1938, Daeng Soetigna, a teacher of Hollandsch Inlandsche School (HIS) in Kuningan, West Java has created angklung musical tones with modern instruments. At first only angklung tone pentatonic (da mi na ti la). In 1938, Daeng soetigna modifying the angklung tone diatonic (do re me fa so la ti). Daeng Soetigna successfully modernize angklung of a pentatonic melodies to diatonic. This angklung became known as Angklung Daeng or Padaeng Angklung. Since that time angklung began to be known internationally which ever shown in the Asia-Africa Conference in Bandung in 1955. Angklung is now more often displayed in the form of orchestra and increasingly nurtured in school. Daeng Soetigna died in 1984. Then Udjo Nalagena (late) as the pupil and his assistant try to preserve and develop the angklung further. Udjo Ngalagena are familiar with the call Mang Udjo and his wife, Uum Sumiati, managed to pack angklung very interesting. They established Saung Angklung Udjo: Sundanese Art & Bamboo Craft Center in early 1967. II.2 Saung Angklung Udjo Saung Angklung Udjo (SAU) is a place where angklung art evolved with the dynamic and fascinating world. Not only play traditional musical instruments but also play modern songs which popular. Saung Angklung Udjo is a workshop where the culture, which is the venue, the center of bamboo handicrafts and workshop musical instruments of bamboo. In addition, Saung Angklung Udjo has a purpose as educational laboratories and centers of learning to preserve Sundanese culture especially angklung. It relies on the spirit of mutual cooperation between it residents. Founded in 1966 by Udjo Ngalagena and his wife, Uum Sumiati, with the intent to preserve and maintain traditional Sundanese arts and culture. Located at Jln. Padasuka 118, East Bandung West Java Indonesia. With an atmosphere where the air is fresh and surrounded by bamboo trees, bamboo crafts and interior of bamboo to bamboo musical instrument. Saung Angklung Udjo is like an oasis of culture in the midst of dense settlement, in the land area of 1.2 hectares. There have been 42 countries which recognize the game angklung. Demand a lot from the Netherlands, South Korea as well, even in South Korea angklung has been introduced since elementary school. Besides regular performances every evening, Saung Angklung Udjo have repeatedly held a special show performed in the morning or afternoon. Shows are held at locations not limited Saung Angklung Udjo only, but many invitations appear in various places both inside and outside the country, in August of 2000 at the Sasana Ganesha Cultural ITB, Bandung, Saung Angklung Udjo held a concert in collaboration with the singer nicknamed Shirley Temple of Indonesia, namely Sherina. Saung Angklung Udjo not limited to selling only the performing arts course, the various products of traditional bamboo musical instruments (angklung, arumba, calung and others) made and sold to the buyer. Aside from being a traditional musical instrument, angklung also symbolizes human life that can’t stand alone but need each other. Large and small tubes of bamboo row describes the development of human life. Small bamboo tube illustrates that everyone has a dream and desire to become a great man who symbolized by the big tube. When angklung shaken, all the tubes create harmony which depict life as it should. Saung Angklung Udjo was founded in 1966 by Udjo Ngalagena and his wife, Uum Sumiati. With a strong will and dedication to preserve and develop traditional Sundanese arts and culture. Saung Angklung Udjo illustrate the nature and culture in harmony, not surprisingly Saung Angklung Udjo be a goals tourist destinations culture of Sunda as a legacy of the cultural heritage of the world. Located in the East Bandung, Saung Angklung Udjo is the perfect place to enjoy fresh air and beauty of the bamboo handicrafts and musical sound of the instrument of bamboo.
